Over 70 community groups have signed a letter demanding the immediate cancellation of anti-immigrant reality TV show, Border Security. The letter is addressed to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, who personally approved the show, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and various companies with interests in the show, including Force Four Entertainment and Shaw Media. The letter is part of a growing “Cancel Border Security” campaign by rights groups and progressives.
Over 100 actors, directors, producers, directors, technicians and other cultural professionals have signed an open letter demanding the immediate cancellation of anti-immigrant TV series Border Security. The letter is addressed to National Geographic, Force Four Entertainment, Shaw Media, Global BC, the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), “and all other producers, financiers, and broadcasters of Border Security”.
The signatories include award-winning author Naomi Klein.
Last week, the Associated Press ditched the demeaning and exclusionary term “illegal immigrant”. Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in 2011, responded with: “It was inevitable. It was just a matter of time.”
The New York Times called the AP decision “bold” and announced that it, too, is now reconsidering the term. That’s according to Margaret Sullivan, the Times’ public editor.

Via Aljazeera: The Rageh Omaar Report – The Right to Roam:
Unwanted, marginalised, defiant – the Roma people have become the target of governments across Europe.
In France and Italy they have been thrown out in their thousands – accused of illegally overstaying their welcome and blamed for increases in crime.
They say that in their countries of origin they are victims of discrimination – a minority with few opportunities.
They are now taking advantage of European Union laws that allow freedom of travel to all European citizens – looking West to find a better life, yet reluctant to adapt to Western ways.
The Roma issue has now been forced on EU policy makers – they have to find a balance between the growing hostility and the rights of the Roma.
Surely this progressive step by the AP should enlighten Canada’s mainstream media, the Canadian Border Services Agency and immigrant-bashing Conservative politicians such as Jason Kenney. It should make them “see” that recent non-European immigrants are as human as European immigrants and their immigrant ancestors?
The Associated Press has – declared that all human beings are equal by ditching the demeaning term “illegal immigrant” from its famed Stylebook for journalistic style and grammar. Stories by the organization will no longer refer to people living in a country without proper documentation as “illegal immigrants.” AP journalists will now refer to them as people who “entered a country without permission” or “living in a country illegally”.
